Nosara is on Costa Rica's Pacific coast in Guanacaste. Here's everything you need to know about airports, drive times, and transportation options.
Two international airports serve Nosara. Your choice depends on flight availability and how much driving you want to do.
2.5-3 hours drive, 125 km. The closest international airport with direct flights from US cities including Houston, Dallas, Denver, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Miami. Roads are paved most of the way. This is the recommended option for most travelers.
4-5 hours drive, 250 km. Costa Rica's main international airport with the most flight connections worldwide. A longer but scenic drive through the mountains and across the Tempisque Bridge. Add an hour in rainy season.
Cell service can be spotty on the drive. Download the Guanacaste region in Google Maps or Waze before leaving the airport so you have navigation even without signal.
A common mistake: Nosara town is 6 km past Playa Guiones. When you see signs for Playa Guiones, that's where Surfside Nosara is located. Set your GPS to "Surfside Nosara" or "Playa Guiones" specifically.
The final 20 km into Nosara is a dusty, rocky road with winding turns and potholes. Drive slowly, especially at night - watch for pedestrians, cyclists, and animals. It's part of the adventure, so relax and enjoy it.
The route goes through Nicoya, then turns at a small junction in Caimital. Having written directions as backup gives peace of mind if your phone dies or loses signal.
Skip the drive entirely. Sansa Airlines operates daily flights from San Jose (SJO) directly to Nosara's airstrip. The flight takes 35 minutes with stunning coastline views. From Nosara airstrip, it's 10 minutes to Playa Guiones. Book early in peak season as these small planes fill up fast.
A 4x4 is recommended, especially during rainy season (May-November) when roads can get rough. Book in advance during peak season. Major rental companies operate from both airports.
Free onsite parking for all Surfside Nosara guests. No need to worry about finding street parking or paying for a lot.
Door-to-door service from either airport. From Liberia runs around $140-180, from San Jose $280-400 depending on vehicle size. More comfortable than driving yourself after a long flight.
Budget-friendly option with set departure times. Interbus and Tropical Tours are reliable operators serving Nosara daily.
